Typical Designs

Brochure Site
This is a brochure site designed to advertise the companies operations. The site is designed in Dream Weaver based on an intial design done in WordPress, and includes a link to the WordPress Blog that has been kept in the design.

The new design uses the same basic layout but uses enhanced image displays provided by javscript scripts and flash components.

The javascript is all based on the jquery library and jquery addons and the flash uses components from the FlashXml.net range of products.

These are very easy to use flash addons that can be controlled exclusively using XML files making them very easy to use and to integrate into other designs. They are one of the few packages that allows multiple use of the same flash components due to the method they have chosen to control the XML files. The names of the XML configuration files can be individually set for each use of the component so there are no problems with interference between the different settings.

Improving an existing Site C Millington & Sons have been running a web site using Joomla and VirtueMart since 2004, unfortunately this combination does not produce a site that is SEO friendly. Even after four years the site has no real position with the Google search engine, and the site receives very few visitors.

Tod Designs was asked to take over the site and to improve the usefulness of the site for the company. The first task was to find the current situation with the site and to do this we installed Google Analytics on the existing site. It very quickly became evident from the analysis of results, that the site was receiving a mere ten visits per day and that the only searches were for C Millingtons, indicating the the searchers already knew of the firm and were probably only looking for directions to the showroom or for a telephone number to contact the company. The site had a 0 ranking with Google and very few of the pages were even indexed due to th way in which the existing software generated the page links. The customer also found the Joomla / Virtuemart interface difficult to use and the site was not being updated, nor was there much other than large numbers of pictures all with coded references.

It was decided to move the site over to Actinic as this would make the site easier to maintain, and more search engine friendly. The initial work involved moving the basic design into Actinic as a new template and then moving over the pictures whilst changing them to more meaningful names. Google analytics is now enabled on the new site and the second phase of updating all the pages and products with new descriptive text is in progress.

Transferring a site Mosaic Trader UK had an existing site running on Actinic Express and had started to work on a new site using Actinic Catalog, but needed assistance in getting the site up and running. Tod Designs took over the existing design completing a javascript navigation menu and carrying out a number of other tasks on the new site including:-

1)Modifying the basic design to provide fragments at the top of multi column pages.

2)Changing the current prices from VAT inclusive to VAT exclusive, including mods to display the VAT inclusive price on multi component products.

3)Setting up shipping bands for UK, Europe, Rest of world, and Highlands, and off-lying islands in the UK.

4)Setting up payment provider services.

5)Importing customer detail from Actinic Express.

6)Setting up a new hosting account with a new domain, including modifications to domain settings.

7)Setting up email account for the new domain.

8) Setting up a redirect from the existing Actinic Express domain to use the new site when the Actinic Express account was closed. This is a php file that redirects the different pages on the old site to the new pages, rather than just a global redirect to a single page.

In addition we provided advice on using the new Actinic program so that the owners could take over maintenance of the site.

Custom Software This is a registered users only site and the owner was looking for a means of dealing with the selection of up to 50 options from a list of over 70 items. The custom software uses an Actinic addon that has been modified to provide the exact requirements of the site owner.

The site owner wanted customers to be able to pick options from a list of nearly 70 items and for these options to come through the order process, in one case to pick just seven items from the list and in another to pick just 50 items from the list. The order needed to show a list of all the picked options and the number picked had to be controlled.

We found an Actinic addon that could be adapted to work as required and having purchased the addon proceeded to modify the perl code and adapt it to provide the features that the customer required.
